I loved my MacBook Pro (Part 1)

I used to say, I love my MacBook Pro. Fast, thin, light. My first Mac and favourite laptop to date. But after this morning, I can only say, I loved it.In a nutshell: Leaving for work this morning, I set my laptop on the trunk while coaxing my dog, Macallan, into the car. Basically, my morning go-to-work routine. Except for one detail.Driving away, something felt wrong. You know the feeling you get when something is wrong but you don’t know what it is. Say, you forget to lock the door, or leave the garage door open, something just doesn’t feel right. By the time I reach StarBucks, I realize what’s bothering me. No laptop. I check the back seat, and then a sickening feeling begins to settle in my stomach. I turn around and race back home. On the way I catch sight of the source of my angst.Lying on the road, left for deadThe expression on my face—captured by my brother, René, who was riding shotgun—is not a smile, but a grimace. When you look at the second picture, you will see why.Falling off my trunk was not enough…Falling off my car was not enough. Apparently, my MacBook Pro deserved a brutal death: Gravel, snow and being run over by who-knows how many SUVs on what has got to be the bleakest May 24th of human history.Tomorrow: Post mortem….Sean

Whoa. I would croak. I’m using my MacBook Pro as we speak…and the thought of losing it sent chills up my spine.

Odds are, you’ll be able to save the hard disk, though not the display. Maybe the motherboard if you’re very lucky. Best of luck, mate.

Stefan: I think you might be right about the hard disk. The laptop should be dry by tomorrow, at which point I’m going to see what works and what doesn’t. I’ll post more photos of the grizzly details.

Hey - check with your home owners insurance or renter’s insurance - if you have either you are propably covered less your deductible.

That sucks, but look on the bright side, the rumor sites all say that there are new MBPs being released during WWDC. You could replace it with a new one. But remember, next time, laptop FIRST, dog second!

I guess that’s one way to make a thinner MacBook!

Dude… we need to take up a collection, thats worse than horible. I’m typing this on my MBP right now and I got the fear that could happen to anyone… you’ve got some good publicity from Fake Steve (how I got here).

Tell you what, set up a paypal account and I’ll front the first $50 donation.

That’s horrible! What a terrible way for it to go.

Bummer, man. But hey, you’re on Fake Steve. How cool is that?

I know you probably hate snow now, but where I am it’s 90+ and hot as hell!

Hmm. Going to Starbucks? There’s your problem. Coffee first, pants second, notebook in it’s notebook CASE third, case-into-trunk fourth. Dog next. By then the coffee should be working well and you’ll have noticed if you have done any of the above steps in the wrong order or missed any of them.

Sean, that really licks man. Solution: move south where there is less snow (he he). Dude I guess we’re shopping for new notebooks this weekend.

If it was a dell I could’ve understood suicide. But this, this is just a great loss. Much condolences.

Post #1 Rachelle: Question - how does this (incident) make PCs better?
PCs are more disposable? What?

[…] Yesterday my MacBook Pro died. A senseless tragedy made worse because I was responsible. Yes, I killed my precious, perfect, prized MacBook Pro. (In case you missed it, the account of my now-legendary stupidity can be found here.) […]

Dude, God didn’t intend for people to use laptops. Desktops it is. I’ll never put my G5 on the trunk while I take care of the dog and then leave it– See?

I hope that picture was taken in January or something. It’s almost -June- and it still looks all wintery where you are.

Toby said,

May 27, 2007 @ 12:28 am

Was it still able to power up?

Sean said,

May 27, 2007 @ 10:12 am

Andy: No, the picture was taken last Thursday, May 24th. Which should make you feel better about wherever you live. Calgary weather is pretty erratic.

Toby: It powered up a little. It tried ejecting the CD, and the fans began spinning… But that was it.

Rachelle: Time to grow up?

Anyway, that certanly sucks. Reminds me what happened to my dads’ friends in the early 90s’ (in 1991 if I recall right), they were on the road and the car stero broke. No problem, they got a portable CD/radio with quite good speakers, back then it was actually quite expensive. So they stopped at a gas-station, filled the gas tank and paid, while driving away the suddenly felt as if they had for gotten something. Then they realized that they had forgotten the portable stereo on the roof of the car and returned to the gas station, the thing was blown into a milloin bits as it hit the ground. To sum this up, this costed them thier music for the trip and a 7000 finnish mark portable stereo (about 1000 current US $)
